Are you a fan of competing or do you think its pointless?

Just trying to get people's opinions on competing at the amateur level. Do you think its worth the time and money to compete if you don't have any aspirations of going pro?

So many stories of people who ruined marriages, relationships, friendships and went broke who competed. Even ended up going bat **** crazy and ending up with an image disorder for the rest of their life.
