Does Starving Yourself Actually Help You Lose Weight?

There are tons upon TONS of people in the world that wish to lose weight and strut about here and there in their newfound confidence but is starving yourself the way to go? The short answer is no, but of course I’m going to explain the long answer to you anyway so sit back, relax and read up!

Losing weight requires you to reduce your total caloric intake daily so it would make perfect sense to stop eating altogether to achieve this, right? RIGHT?! Not at all. Let’s begin to explain why; one of the things that happens when you decide to starve yourself is your body goes into what we call “starvation mode” and in this state your metabolism begins to slowly shut down. Starving yourself will trick your body into believing it may not eat again so what it does is begin fighting to hold on to every calorie and every ounce of fat on the body, kind of counterproductive right? This serves as a method of protection to aid in our survival, for instance if you’re ever stranded somewhere with little to nothing to eat, this ability will indeed come in handy.

Another reason why drastic starvation isn’t the ideal method to losing weight is eventually you’re going to crack and when you crack, you’re going to gorge. The hunger you experience will get so uncontrollable that you will eat everything in sight which you certainly don’t want to do when trying to lose weight and frankly, you shouldn’t ever HAVE to experience something like this. Combining reason 1 and 2 brings us to reason 3; when your body enters starvation mode and you decide to gorge on a sizeable meal, the calories from said meal are processed differently than the norm. With your body looking to seize every calorie and your metabolism moving on turtle time what do you think is going to happen with all of that food consumed? You guessed it, stored away immediately to become more…FAT (right back to square 1).

At the bare minimum, females are to consume about 1,200 calories per day and males are appointed 1,500 calories per day both are required to support nutrition for bodily functions such as breathing, pumping blood and etc. Notice how I mentioned the previous numbers as the minimum which means you can exceed these numbers at any time and STILL lose weight ladies and gentlemen. Starving yourself should NEVER be an option and I can’t stress this enough, there is an abundance of safe protocol available out there for losing weight and keeping it off. Starvation diets are not only detrimental to the body in the present but can also maim your metabolism and take a toll on your health in the future so please avoid these at all costs. Instead of cutting food out altogether in an effort to lose weight, try taking baby steps in terms of diet and exercising. Educate yourself first about potential meal plans, physical activity and just overall procedure that will suit you before implanting any. The goal here is to lose the weight and maintain healthy living in the safest way possible, be safe and go kick fat’s butt!
